Director, NIH Office of Portfolio Analysis
George Santangelo is the Director of the Office of Portfolio Analysis (OPA) in the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) at NIH. He received his bachelor's degree in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate in genetics from Yale University. Before coming to NIH, George was a systems biologist and data scientist working to understand the transcriptional regulation of gene expression. He joined NIGMS as a program director in 2009 and was appointed as the Director of OPA in 2011. In OPA, George leads a team of analysts, data scientists, and software developers to enable data-driven decision-making. George and his team developed the Relative Citation Ratio, a field- and time-normalized metric to assess scientific influence on the article level; the metric was published in PLOS Biology in 2016 and has been adopted widely by the research assessment community.
