Director, National Exposure Research Laboratory
Timothy Watkins has worked at the US EPA for over 25 years and is currently the Director of the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) in the US EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD). As the Director of NERL, Tim manages an organization of over 275 scientists and administrative professionals providing exposure science leadership within EPA, across the Federal research community, and the broader scientific community nationally and internationally while conducting innovative exposure science research to improve methods, measurements, models, and system analyses to characterize, reduce and prevent exposures to harmful environmental stressors. Prior to his current position, Tim served as Deputy Director of NERL where he was responsible for leading the business operations of the organization, while also providing targeted scientific leadership on a variety of issues related to exposure assessment, monitoring, and modeling. In addition, Tim has provided scientific and managerial leadership for ORD while serving as the Deputy National Program Director for the Air, Climate, and Energy research program and Acting Director of the Environmental Public Health Division in the ORD’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory. Throughout his career at EPA, Tim has focused on building and supporting collaborative relationships within and outside of the Agency including serving as the co-chair of Scientific and Technical Subcommittee under the US-Canada Air Quality Agreement and leading collaborative efforts for EPA contributions to the US Centers for Disease Control’s Environmental Public Health Tracking program. Tim received his M.S. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his B.A. in Economics and Mathematics from Rollins College.
